The 2023 Annular Eclipse

Eclipse timelapse

I visited the Yucatán Peninsula for a short vacation and to photograph October’s annular eclipse at the coastal town of Celestún. I had some concerns about the weather during that day, knowing the rainy season was not over, but overall it was a great experience. The sky was mostly clear, and the clouds took over a few seconds after annularity.

The ring of fire. The only picture I managed to take before the clouds obscured the maximum eclipse. Taken with Sony a6400. 350mm, 1/4000s, f6.3, ISO 320
The small openings between the palm leaves create a pinhole camera effect that’s not noticeable during most days.

The beach quickly got crowded. Seems like the local restaurants weren’t expecting so many people!
